COMO Metropolitan Bangkok: A Calm, Design-Led Retreat in Sathorn
Bangkok is a city that rarely asks you to slow down. The traffic, the markets, the rooftop bars, the shopping and the constant movement can make even a short stay feel wonderfully full.
Then you arrive at COMO Metropolitan Bangkok, and everything becomes quieter.
On South Sathorn Road, the hotel has long had a reputation for thoughtful design and wellness, but its recent transformation has given the property a fresh sense of purpose. Reopened after a six-month renovation, the hotel was reimagined by Italian designer Paola Navone, with refreshed rooms and suites, new dining concepts and a renewed focus on COMO's signature approach to wellness.
The result is not a hotel that competes with Bangkok's energy. It gives you somewhere to escape from it.
A Different Side of Bangkok
COMO Metropolitan sits in Sathorn, one of Bangkok's important business and lifestyle districts, close to Silom, Lumpini Park and some of the city's best restaurants and shopping. The Chao Phraya River is also within reach, while the hotel is around 40 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport by car, traffic permitting.
This is one of the reasons I like the location.
You are close enough to everything that matters, but you are not sleeping in the middle of Bangkok's busiest tourist streets. The hotel feels almost tucked away once you step inside.
It is an especially good address for travellers who want to combine sightseeing with downtime. Spend the morning exploring the city, return for a treatment or swim, then head back out for dinner.
Or simply stay put.
The Design
COMO has always been associated with a particular kind of restraint, and the renewed Metropolitan Bangkok stays true to that philosophy.
The interiors use a calm palette of whites and natural tones, with Thai ceramics, woven materials, carved wood and other handcrafted details adding warmth. Rather than filling every surface, the design leaves room for light and space to do the work.
The influence of East and West is subtle. There are Thai references, but they never become decorative shorthand for "Thailand."
That restraint is particularly effective in Bangkok, where the world outside can already provide more than enough colour, noise and movement.
The Rooms
COMO Metropolitan Bangkok currently has 137 rooms and suites, with the accommodation designed around generous proportions, natural light and a sense of privacy.
The Studio Room, at 43 square metres, is considerably more spacious than many city-hotel entry categories. It has a king bed, living area, workspace and bathroom with both a separate walk-in shower and bathtub.
The Metropolitan Rooms are larger still, measuring 51 to 54 square metres, with either a king or twin beds and a proper living area. Interconnecting options are available, which is useful for families travelling together.
There is also a Metropolitan Room with Pool View, where hand-woven lanterns, sculptural ceramics and natural light create a particularly peaceful atmosphere overlooking the hotel's pool.
But one of the more unusual categories is the Metropolitan Room with Courtyard.
At 80 square metres, it has a private outdoor terrace and outdoor bath, giving you a small pocket of open-air space in the middle of the city.
That is the kind of room I would choose for a longer Bangkok stay.
The Suites
The larger suites take the hotel's sense of space to another level.
The Penthouse Duplex Suite covers 150 square metres across two floors, with a living room, dining area, bedroom, conservatory-style sitting room and large bathroom. Depending on the room, views extend across the city or towards the hotel pool.
At the top of the accommodation offering is the COMO Suite, a 240-square-metre two-bedroom residence on the highest floor.
It has two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a large living room, fully equipped office, kitchen and dining area, and some of the hotel's most expansive city views. It can accommodate up to six guests, making it a particularly interesting option for families or groups who want to stay together.
These are not suites designed simply to impress on arrival. They are genuinely livable spaces.
COMO Shambhala: The Heart of the Hotel
Wellness has always been central to the COMO experience, and at the Metropolitan Bangkok it is almost impossible to separate the hotel from COMO Shambhala.
The wellness centre is one of the group's major urban spas, with 10 treatment rooms, hydropools, steam rooms, a fitness centre, yoga studio and a 25-metre outdoor lap pool.
Treatments range from massages and body therapies to facials and specialised wellness experiences, including traditional Thai treatments. The spa currently operates from 9am to 9pm.
There is also daily yoga, with the hotel offering scheduled morning sessions and access to a yoga mat and meditation videos in the rooms.
The wellness facilities are available to hotel guests, and that makes a difference. You do not have to plan an elaborate spa day. You can simply go downstairs for a steam, swim a few lengths or book a treatment between sightseeing plans.
The Pool
The 25-metre outdoor lap pool is one of the property's most attractive spaces.
It is not a giant resort pool designed for families spending all day in the water. It is calmer than that, more urban and deliberately understated.
The pool belongs to the COMO Shambhala side of the hotel and works beautifully for an early morning swim before Bangkok gets busy.
There is something satisfying about starting the day with a few lengths and breakfast rather than immediately stepping into the city's traffic.
nahm: Thai Cuisine With Serious Credentials
Then there is nahm, the hotel's Michelin-starred Thai restaurant.
The restaurant is currently helmed by Chef Pim Techamuanvivit, and the hotel describes its cuisine as centred on exceptional ingredients and Thai flavours. The restaurant has retained a Michelin star for nine consecutive years under her leadership.
This is not simply a hotel restaurant that happens to have a Michelin star.
nahm has its own reputation in Bangkok and attracts diners from outside the hotel as well. For guests, one advantage is priority booking, which can make a significant difference when trying to secure a table at a restaurant of this calibre.
Private dining is also available, including traditional Thai banquet experiences.
If you are staying at COMO Metropolitan, this is the dinner I would plan in advance rather than leaving to chance.
COMO Cuisine
The other main dining concept is COMO Cuisine, which takes a more relaxed approach.
The menu focuses on fresh, nourishing flavours alongside international favourites, with COMO's health-conscious philosophy incorporated into the food. The hotel also offers COMO Shambhala Kitchen dishes, including plant-based pasta, nutrient-rich soups, fresh juices and lighter high-protein dishes.
It is a useful counterpoint to nahm.
You can have a serious Thai dinner one evening, then keep things simple the next day with something lighter after a treatment or swim.
Wellness Doesn't Stop at the Spa
One of the more appealing things about the COMO approach is that wellness is not isolated in a treatment room.
The rooms themselves include yoga mats and meditation videos, while the dining programme includes health-focused options. The hotel also offers personal training, and the fitness centre is fully equipped for a proper workout rather than simply providing a treadmill and a couple of weights.
This is particularly useful for longer stays.
You can establish a routine here without having to think too hard about it.
Wake up. Yoga. Breakfast. Bangkok.
Or, if you are anything like me on holiday, breakfast first and yoga later.
A Hotel That Understands Space
Perhaps the most striking thing about COMO Metropolitan is how much space it gives you.
Bangkok can be physically crowded. Sidewalks, trains, markets, shopping centres and roads all compete for room.
The hotel goes in the opposite direction.
The rooms are large. The palette is quiet. The pool gives you breathing space. The spa creates another layer of separation from the city. Even the design seems to encourage you to put your phone down for a while.
That feeling is probably the hotel's greatest strength.
Exploring From Sathorn
The concierge can arrange experiences around Bangkok, including street-food trails, art walks and tailored city itineraries. The hotel is also close to Lumpini Park, Silom Road, shopping areas and cultural attractions such as Mr. Kukrit's Heritage House and Patpong Night Market.
And because the hotel sits between some of Bangkok's major business and lifestyle districts, it is equally practical for work and leisure.
For shopping, the city's major destinations are accessible without difficulty. For culture, the river and Old Bangkok are within reach by taxi or public transport.
The key is not to try to do everything in one day.
COMO is a hotel that rewards a slower itinerary.
Sustainability
The hotel has also been working to reduce its environmental footprint, including eliminating single-use plastic bottles, reducing waste and using local and seasonal produce in its Michelin-starred dining.
It is a sensible extension of the hotel's overall philosophy.
Nothing feels particularly loud or performative about the approach. Sustainability sits alongside wellness, local ingredients and thoughtful design rather than being treated as a separate marketing exercise.
The Overall Experience
COMO Metropolitan Bangkok is not the hotel I would choose if the main goal were to be in the middle of Bangkok's nightlife every night.
I would choose it if I wanted Bangkok and somewhere peaceful to return to.
That distinction matters.
There are hotels where the city is the experience and the room is simply where you sleep. Here, the hotel becomes part of the trip. A long breakfast, an afternoon treatment, a few laps in the pool, an hour with a book in the room.
Then, when you are ready, Bangkok is right outside.
COMO Metropolitan Bangkok has always had a clear identity, and its latest transformation has strengthened rather than changed it.
The renewed interiors by Paola Navone, spacious rooms, Thai-inspired details and strong emphasis on natural light give the hotel a distinctive sense of calm.
But it is the combination of COMO Shambhala and nahm that really sets it apart.
You can spend the morning in the pool or at yoga, have a nourishing lunch, disappear for a treatment and then dress up for one of Bangkok's best Thai dining experiences without leaving the property.
For couples, the courtyard rooms and larger suites are particularly appealing. Families have interconnecting rooms and substantial multi-bedroom accommodation. Business travellers benefit from the Sathorn location and generous workspaces.
And for anyone who has spent several days rushing around Bangkok, there is something wonderfully restorative about returning to a hotel that asks nothing of you except to slow down.
COMO Metropolitan Bangkok is a city hotel, but its greatest pleasure is the sense that, for a little while, you have stepped out of the city.
