Some hotels preserve history.

Gastwerk Hotel Hamburg does both.

Hidden inside a former 19th-century gasworks in Hamburg’s Bahrenfeld district, the hotel helped pioneer industrial-chic hospitality long before converted factories and warehouse hotels became global design trends. Today, more than two decades after opening, Gastwerk still feels remarkably original.

And honestly, that’s because the building itself does most of the talking.

Massive brick walls.
Towering industrial ceilings.
Steel beams crossing open spaces.
Loft-style rooms flooded with natural light.

It feels less like checking into a conventional hotel and more like temporarily living inside Hamburg’s industrial history.

When I arrived at the @zollenspiekerfaehrhaus, I didn’t realise the hotel’s location had over 750 years of history. The hotel was built in 2012 but the old building and restaurant can still be found here and continue to attract guests locally and from all over the world.

I was particularly impressed by the beautiful landscape and view of the Elbe as well as how calm and quiet the place is as it is located outside of the city of Hamburg.

It is the perfect getaway or staycation for anyone searching for a place away from the busy city. There is a regular bus back to Hamburg city centre, making the location easily reachable by public transport.

You can also have a mini retreat at the location as they have a relaxing sauna area and two restaurants on-site, which both offer amazing dishes.

As someone who loves slow travel and locations in remote areas, this is certainly one place I will keep returning to.
