The Ivy Hotel Baltimore: Quiet Luxury in a Historic Mount Vernon Mansion
There are luxury hotels that impress with scale, and then there are those that make an impression by making the world feel smaller.
The Ivy Hotel belongs firmly to the latter.
Behind ivy-covered walls in Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, this intimate 17-room hotel occupies a magnificent late-19th-century mansion where grand architecture, exceptional dining and remarkably thoughtful hospitality come together to create something that feels increasingly rare: a hotel where staying in can be every bit as compelling as going out.
As Maryland’s only hotel awarded Two MICHELIN Keys and a member of Relais & Châteaux since 2015, The Ivy arrives with considerable credentials. But what stayed with us most was not an accolade.
It was how effortlessly cared for we felt.
A Mansion Made to Feel Like Home
The Ivy has just eight suites and nine guest rooms, each individually furnished and filled with its own personality.
Across the accommodations are details designed for lingering: 400-thread-count Frette sheets, fireplaces, sumptuous bathrooms with heated limestone floors, plush robes and slippers, and nightly turndown service. Depending on the room, guests might find a balcony overlooking the leafy courtyard, a corner turret with views across Mount Vernon, or an expansive living space that feels more private residence than hotel room.
That residential quality extends throughout the mansion.
The library invites you to pull a book from the shelves and stay awhile. There is a piano waiting to be played, a full-size billiards table, board games and handcrafted puzzles. Coffee can migrate into the garden. Afternoon tea can stretch leisurely beside the fire.
Nothing seems to insist upon an itinerary.
That may be one of The Ivy’s greatest luxuries.
A Remarkably Inclusive Approach to Luxury
At The Ivy, luxury is expressed as much through generosity as it is through beautiful surroundings.
For guests staying on standard rates, an unusually extensive collection of amenities is included: daily chef-prepared breakfast, a stocked in-room refrigerator, valet parking, private car service based on availability, afternoon tea, cocktails at the Mansion Bar, on-site activities, housekeeping and nightly turndown.
Hungry later? Snacks are available. Fancy a glass of wine? The Mansion Bar awaits. Want breakfast without leaving the cocoon of your room? That can arrive at your door.
The result is a stay with surprisingly few interruptions. Instead of repeatedly reaching for a wallet or considering another room charge, guests are encouraged to simply enjoy the house.
There is a distinct pleasure in that freedom.
The Art of Doing Very Little
Baltimore is waiting immediately beyond The Ivy’s doors, but this is one hotel where we would forgive you for temporarily ignoring it.
The public spaces are exceptionally peaceful, and there is no pressure to constantly be doing something. Read. Play billiards. Pour a drink. Wander into the courtyard. Take afternoon tea. Book time at the intimate Ivy Spa. Return to your room and sink into a bath.
The atmosphere manages to be elegant without becoming ceremonial and luxurious without feeling impersonal.
Relais & Châteaux properties are known for celebrating individuality and a sense of place rather than uniformity, and The Ivy embodies that spirit beautifully. This is unmistakably a grand Baltimore mansion, not a hotel that could simply be transplanted into another city.
Dinner at Magdalena
As evening arrived, we only needed to head downstairs.
Magdalena, A Maryland Bistro, is The Ivy’s acclaimed culinary concept and an essential part of the experience. Its seasonally evolving, from-scratch menu takes inspiration from the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay region, with an emphasis on local sourcing, sustainability and relationships with nearby farmers and purveyors.
Our dinner was magical.
There is something particularly lovely about an exceptional dinner followed not by a drive across town, but by a walk through the same mansion and upstairs to bed. The evening feels continuous, almost cinematic: cocktails, dinner, softly lit hallways, then the quiet of your room waiting upstairs.
Magdalena doesn’t feel like an amenity added to a luxury hotel. It feels integral to The Ivy’s identity.
Breakfast Worth Waking Up For
If dinner was the grand evening performance, breakfast was the encore we didn’t know we needed.
The Ivy’s chef-prepared breakfast is included with standard stays and can be enjoyed downstairs or delivered to your room, and we happily experienced both.
Fresh juice, hot coffee, eggs, local meats, house-smoked salmon and baskets of freshly made pastries are among the possibilities, but some of the smallest details left the largest impression.
Everything baked in-house felt like a reminder that no part of the experience had been treated as an afterthought.
And then there were the house-made butters.
We would happily write them a love poem.
Breakfast in a beautiful hotel is always a pleasure. Breakfast delivered to your room, surrounded by the quiet of a historic mansion with nowhere you urgently need to be, feels positively decadent.
Hospitality That Earns Its Accolades
A beautiful building can create an impressive hotel. Exceptional service transforms it into a memorable one.
The Ivy’s approach to hospitality is deeply personal. From arrival and valet service to turndown at the end of the evening, the experience is built around anticipating what might make a guest more comfortable.
The scale helps. With only 17 rooms and suites, there is an intimacy that would be difficult to recreate in a sprawling luxury property.
But intimacy alone does not create hospitality.
The warmth of the team, attention to detail and generosity woven throughout the stay are what make the mansion feel alive.
Our First Relais & Châteaux Experience
The Ivy was our first opportunity to experience a Relais & Châteaux hotel, and perhaps there could not have been a more fitting introduction.
There is grandeur here, certainly: historic architecture, beautifully appointed accommodations, refined dining and international recognition.
Yet The Ivy’s greatest indulgence may be tranquility.
Luxury here isn’t about filling every moment. It is having breakfast brought upstairs because you aren’t ready to leave your room. It is afternoon tea without watching the clock. It is wandering downstairs for a cocktail, discovering a book in the library, or lingering over dinner knowing that your room is only a staircase away.
It is being given permission to slow down.
And in a magnificent mansion in the heart of Baltimore, The Ivy makes slowing down feel splendid.
